Joint Preparation Guide

Fit-up, bevel, root opening and cleanliness basics

Clean metal is easier to weld consistently

Remove oil, paint, scale and contamination as required by the process and procedure. Galvanized coatings create hazardous fumes and require appropriate controls.

Bevel and root opening

Thicker groove welds often require a bevel and controlled root opening to achieve the required penetration. Exact angles, land and gap depend on the WPS/joint design.

Fit-up control

Tack sequence, clamps, magnets and strongbacks help hold alignment. Recheck dimensions after tacking because weld shrinkage can pull the assembly.
