Understand the basic layout of common welding symbols
The reference line carries the weld symbol; the arrow points to the joint. In common AWS-style notation, symbol placement above or below the line communicates other-side or arrow-side information.
Fillet, square-groove, V-groove, bevel-groove, plug/slot and spot/seam symbols communicate the basic weld type. Dimensions around the symbol can indicate size, length, pitch and other requirements.
For fabrication drawings, use the governing drawing standard and do not guess at an unfamiliar symbol.
