Stick Welding Settings Guide

Pick the rod and diameter to see a general starting range, then verify the electrode manufacturer data.

How to tune the range

Start inside the manufacturer range. If the rod sticks constantly and the arc feels weak, increase current slightly. If the puddle is uncontrollable, undercut is severe or the rod glows, reduce current and check technique.

Position matters

Vertical and overhead welding often use different current/technique than flat work. Electrode classification and procedure requirements also matter.

Storage matters

Low-hydrogen electrodes have storage/exposure requirements. Follow the electrode manufacturer and applicable code/WPS rather than treating all “7018” as identical.

Frequently asked questions

Why are amperage ranges broad?

Rod brand, diameter, position, machine and arc length all affect a good setting. Use the manufacturer range as the primary reference.

What polarity is common for 7018?

DCEP is common, and some products are formulated for AC. Check the specific electrode label.

Why does 6011 feel different from 7018?

They have different flux systems, arc characteristics and typical use cases. Technique and polarity can differ.
