How to use it

Enter full stock length, finished part length, blade kerf and desired quantity. The calculator estimates parts per stock and the number of full sticks required.

Formula

For repeated equal parts, usable stock is divided by part length plus kerf. The calculation adds back one kerf in the numerator because there is no kerf after the final part in an idealized layout.

Worked example

A 20 ft stick is 240 in. Ten 48 in parts cannot come from two 20 ft sticks after normal kerf, so the plan must account for saw loss.

Common mistakes

Ignoring end cleanup, assuming nominal stock is always exact, and forgetting that some saws leave a wider kerf under load.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include saw kerf?

Yes. Enter your blade kerf and it is included between planned parts.

Why is real leftover sometimes different?

End cleanup, squaring, unusable drops and measurement tolerance can consume more stock.

Should I add a waste allowance?

Yes for production or material ordering. This tool handles the repeated cut pattern, but damaged stock and setup losses are separate.
