How to use the calculator

Select the material and the closest stock shape. Enter nominal outside dimensions, wall/thickness, overall length and quantity. The result gives total estimated weight and weight per foot.

Formula and assumptions

Weight is cross-sectional area × length × material density. Tube calculations subtract the hollow inside area from the outside area.

Weight = Area × Length × Density

Worked example

For 2 × 2 × .125 in square tube, the calculator subtracts the 1.75 × 1.75 in hollow section from the 2 × 2 in outside section, then multiplies the steel area by 12 inches and steel density to estimate pounds per foot.

Common mistakes

Do not enter gauge number as decimal thickness. Use actual decimal thickness. For pipe, nominal pipe size is not the same as outside diameter.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this steel weight calculator?

It is a planning estimate based on nominal dimensions and typical density. Mill tolerances, corner radii and actual alloy can change weight.

Can I use the result for engineered lifting or load ratings?

No. Use certified supplier or mill data and qualified engineering for load-rated work.

What density is used for carbon steel?

The calculator uses about 0.2836 lb per cubic inch for carbon steel.
