Measure and lay out
Start with reliable tape measures, squares, calipers, markers/scribes and a flat surface. Accurate fit-up reduces welding time and distortion.
Cut and prep
Choose cutting tools appropriate to the stock you actually use, plus grinding and deburring tools. Keep sparks away from flammables and protect eyes and hearing.
Welding station
Provide stable workholding, a sound work lead path, safe cable routing and enough space for cylinders when gas processes are used. Secure cylinders correctly.
Ventilation and fire safety
Ventilation must control fumes without destroying shielding gas at the weld. Keep suitable fire extinguishing equipment available and inspect the area after hot work.
Storage
Store filler, electrodes, consumables and abrasives so they stay dry, clean and easy to identify. Separate good drops from scrap so leftovers actually get reused.
