How it works

Plate weight uses width × thickness × length × density.

Weight = Cross-sectional area × Length × Density

Worked example

A 12 in wide × .25 in plate strip that is 10 ft long uses a 3 sq in cross-section before density is applied.

Common mistakes

Use actual outside dimensions and decimal wall/thickness. Nominal sizes, gauge labels and mill corner radii can cause differences.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this steel weight calculator?

It is a planning estimate based on nominal dimensions and typical density. Mill tolerances, corner radii and actual alloy can change weight.

Can I use the result for engineered lifting or load ratings?

No. Use certified supplier or mill data and qualified engineering for load-rated work.

What density is used for carbon steel?

The calculator uses about 0.2836 lb per cubic inch for carbon steel.
