Sheet Metal Weight Calculator

Calculate nominal sheet weight using actual dimensions instead of guessing from gauge labels.

Reviewed 2026-10-07

Enter sheet dimensions.
Planning tool only. Verify actual material, manufacturer data, code/WPS requirements and project conditions where applicable.

Formula

Sheet weight is width × length × actual thickness × density × quantity. All dimensions are converted consistently in inches.

Why decimal thickness matters

“16 gauge” is not one universal thickness across steel, stainless and aluminum. For useful calculations, enter the measured or supplier-listed decimal thickness.

Worked example

A 48 × 96 in sheet at .0598 in thickness uses the full sheet volume, then applies the selected material density.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter gauge number or decimal thickness?

Enter decimal thickness. Gauge systems vary by material and a gauge number is not a universal thickness.

Does coating weight matter?

For most shop estimates it is small, but certified shipping or load calculations should use supplier data.

Can this estimate aluminum sheet?

Yes. Choose aluminum and enter the actual decimal thickness.
